IoT Smart City Solution
Smart city IoT solution managing traffic flow, energy consumption, and public services, resulting in 30% reduction in energy costs and improved citizen satisfaction.

Project Background & Objectives
Metropolitan City Council manages public infrastructure for a population of 2.8 million across 340 sq km. Their street lighting ran on fixed schedules set in 1987, their traffic signals operated independently with no network coordination, and waste collection trucks followed routes determined by 1998 planning data. When a neighbouring smart city initiative reported 28% energy savings and a measurable improvement in citizen services satisfaction, the Council commissioned Dristi Technologies to design and deploy a comprehensive IoT infrastructure that would modernise city operations without disrupting essential services.
Smart city projects fail when they prioritise technology over governance. We invested heavily in the city's data governance framework before deploying a single sensor — ensuring citizen privacy, data sovereignty, and clear accountability for every data stream collected.
What Problem Were We Solving?
Metropolitan City Council operated with zero real-time infrastructure data. Street lighting failures took an average of 4.3 days to be reported and repaired — residents were the monitoring system. Traffic signal timing was static and created bottlenecks during school hours and events. Waste trucks completed routes regardless of bin fill levels, making 40% of collections unnecessary. Emergency services response times were impacted by predictable but unmanaged congestion patterns. The Council had a mandate to reduce operating costs by 20% within 3 years while improving citizen satisfaction.
How We Delivered Results
We designed and deployed a three-layer IoT architecture: 4,200 edge devices (smart sensors, actuators, cameras), an Azure IoT Hub ingesting 8 million events per hour, and a city operations dashboard providing real-time visibility across all services. Adaptive traffic signal control reduced congestion at 34 intersections by synchronising signals based on real-time vehicle detection. Smart lighting (1,800 units) dims automatically based on pedestrian presence, saving 34% in lighting energy costs. Dynamic waste collection routes are generated daily based on sensor-reported fill levels, reducing collection journeys by 38%.
Surveyed 340 sq km of infrastructure, selected sensor hardware for 14 deployment categories, and designed a data governance framework compliant with national privacy standards before deployment.
Deployed 4,200 sensors and actuators across traffic, lighting, waste, and environmental monitoring systems — all connected via a dedicated LoRaWAN network with cellular backup.
Built the Azure IoT Hub event processing pipeline, trained traffic optimisation models on 24 months of historical data, and deployed adaptive control algorithms to all 34 intersections.
Launched a public citizen portal for infrastructure fault reporting, built the Council's operations command centre, and delivered a mobile app for field maintenance crews.
Built With Industry-Leading Tools
Every technology was selected for its production readiness, scalability potential, and fit with Metropolitan City Council's long-term roadmap.
In Their Own Words
“This was the most complex technology procurement the Council had ever undertaken. Dristi Technologies guided us through every decision — hardware selection, data governance, citizen privacy, change management for 1,200 staff. A year after go-live, our energy bill is down 30% and the traffic light in front of the hospital finally works properly.”
